    Biography

    From Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania:

    Gilbert B. Phillips, the seventh child of Samuel and Ann (Alford) Phillips, was born in the ancestral home of his family, Devonshire, England, July 31, 1874. He obtained his education in the public schools of his native region, remaining with his mother and the rest of the family when his father and eldest brother set out for the New World in 1883. Eight years later, when he was but sixteen years of age, he joined his father in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, and there apprenticed himself to learn the trade o
