Today marks what would have been the 99th birthday of Doris Day. Over the past several years, she fast became one of my favorite classic Hollywood stars because of the natural charisma and warmth she brought to all her movies; she never fails to make you smile whenever she appears on-screen. TCM treated us in March with its Star of the Month tribute to her, and I had the great pleasure of watching some of her early movies that I hadnt seen before, along with re-watching a lot of her other films. That included revisiting the three romantic comedies she made with Rock Hudson from into the early s. So in honor of her birthday, I wanted to focus on those films and the enduring friendship that came as a result of this charming on-screen pairing.
PILLOW TALK ()
Directed by Michael Gordon
Interior decorator Jan Morrow (Doris Day) and playboy songwriter Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) share a telephone party line. He often keeps it busy as he flirts with his girlfriends, which annoys her as shes trying to call her clients. Brad soon meets Jan by chance and is instantly attracted to her, so he hides his true identity from her and pretends to be a Texas rancher named Rex Stetson. Complications ensue when their mutual friend Jonathan Forbes (Tony Randall) hires a private eye

Doris Day and Rock Hudson: Remembering Their Movies and On Screen Magic
One of the more delightful moments of the recent TCM FilmFestival was a screening of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson film Send Me No Flowers, their third and final big screen sex comedy that had so delighted moviegoers.
Obviously Hudson was not Day’s only leading man, as the singer/actress also starred with Cary Grant in ’s ThatTouch of Mink, James Garner in ’s Move Over Darling and Robert Taylor in ’s Do Not Disturb. And if one is being completely honest, there’s no denying that they all fall into a kind of formula, yet there is just something about those collaborations with Hudson — ’s Pillow Talk, ’s Lover Come Back and Send Me No Flowers — that created a special kind of magic.
The irony? “Hudson doubted his comedy chops going into Pillow Talk,” related TCM host Ben Mankiewicz when introducing the film, “but with some tutoring from Day and director Michael Gordon, he delivered an impressive performance. Hudson said he learned everything he needed to know about comedy from Day, who was, in his words, an actor’s studio all by herself.”
That’s fine for Rock Hudson, but why did these films connect with filmgoers the way that they did?
“That’s actually a complicated question,” offer
