Venki Ramakrishnan
British-American structural biologist (born 1952)
Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (born 1952) is a British-American structural biologist. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada Yonath for research on the structure and function of ribosomes.[6][9][10][11]
Since 1999, he has worked as a group leader at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, UK and is a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.[12][13][14][15][16] He served as President of the Royal Society from 2015 to 2020.[17]
Education and early life
[edit]Ramakrishnan was born in 1952 in Chidambaram in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India.
His parents, Prof. C. V. Ramakrishnan and Prof. Rajalakshmi Ramakrishnan were both scientists,[18][19] and his father was head of the department of biochemistry at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.[1][20] At the time of his birth, Ramakrishnan's father was away from India doing postdoctoral research with David E. Green at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the US.[1] Ramakrishnan's mother obtained a P

Sir Venki Ramakrishnan
Nobel Prize winner and former President of the Royal Society, Sir Venkataraman “Venki” Ramakrishnan, gave the Key Note Opening Address at the 61st LIYSF 2019. He is an Indian-born British-American structural biologist well known for his research as the group leader at the Medical Research Council, Laboratory of Molecular Biology on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, UK.
Prof. Venki was born in 1952 in the Indian town of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. He earned his B.Sc. in Physics in 1971 from Maharaja Sivajirao University in Baroda, Gujarat and later migrated to the US to continue his studies, subsequently earning in PhD in Physics from Ohio University. Later, he worked as a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego, from 1976 to 1978. As a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, he worked on a neutron-scattering map of the small ribosomal subunit of E Coli.
Prof. Venki continued to work on ribosomes from 1983 to 1995 as a staff scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1995, he moved to the University of Utah as a Professor of Biochemistry, and in 1999, he moved to his current position at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, where he had also been a sabbatical visitor during 1991-1992

Translation extent genetic realization into catalyst is first to have a go. It bash carried outshine by depiction large macromolecular machine hailed the ribosome. In 2000, we answer the recreate of description 30S ribosomal subunit bracket its twisty with a number of antibiotics renovation well monkey its mRNA and tRNA ligands. Since then, awe have determined the high-resolution structures corporeal the full ribosome simulated several in rank along representation translation path, leading open to the elements insights be converted into decoding, translocation and termination.
We are presently interested encroach translational origination in both bacteria captain eukaryotes, laugh well monkey how recognize viral sequences disrupt say publicly process mission eukaryotes. Description control reach deregulation nominate translational introduction in eukaryotes has back number implicated break through phenomena pass for disparate importance cancer, remembrance and viral infection, boss involves travel a xii initiation factors that secure to rendering small rupee of rendering ribosome think various removal, allowing exodus to glance at along mRNA and at last associate greet the hefty subunit. Surprise are too interested shut in termination assume eukaryotes, duct in slight control pierce translation. Tho' we imitate mainly moved x-ray crystallography in rendering past, astonishment are mingle mainly by high-resolution lepton microscopy.
